Daniel and I design an orchard in Ippenburg’s beautiful kitchen garden for our new client, a Swiss fruit grower. The kitchen garden covers 5000 m² and is one of the largest and most diverse of its kind in Germany. A sandstone wall dating back to the 15th century surrounds it. Old and new fruit and vegetable varieties grow along herbs, sunflowers, marigolds, dahlias and hollyhocks. A grid of paths, clipped hedges, water basins and seating areas provide structure in the colorful opulence of the mixed borders.
We meet our client and Ippenburg’s owner to hear about their requirements for the orchard. The designated area stretches 100m along and 6m deep along the old wall at the top of the garden. Our design is to combine low maintenance with showing the variety, beauty and longevity of our client’s fruit and berry cultivars.
