The roof terrace with lush planting and a reflective pool, located in Berne’s historic centre, was designed for a professional couple. The terrace is framed by mainly evergreen planting in minimalist bespoke containers. A square water feature reflects leaves and sky. Gently running water creates a peaceful atmosphere in the outdoor room. Purple blossoms in cymes appear on the Japanese maple (Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’) in June. The leaves turn orange and carmine in autumn and make the maple the absolute focal point of this terrace.
Hakonechloa, lace ferns (Polystichum setiferum ‘Proliferum’) and hostas are planted beneath the trees. Columbines (Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Blue Barlow’) and spurge (Euphorbia polychroma) provide spring interest. The clients wanted seasonal planting in summer. Different fuchsias (Fuchsia hybrida) combined with begonia create interest in the shaded part of the terrace. A mix of pale yellow petunias (Petunia hybrida), scarlet cigar plants (Cuphea ignea) and plum asparagus (Asparagus umbellatus) is planted in the sunny area of the terrace.
