courtyard commercial building | norfolk, uk | nicole fischer
The client had an old farm building on his property converted to office space for his employees. The building encloses a courtyard that provides a setting to entertain clients and an area for the staff to lunch and relax. As the courtyard can be viewed from all sides, a central planting bed was designed for visual interest.
The naturalistic planting takes its cue from the meadows around the property. Astrantia major is combined with Euphorbia griffithii, Iris sibirica and Deschampsia cespitosa. Buff York stone was used for the paving to provide a continuation with existing paving elsewhere. Strips of knapped flint in the paving add interest and honour the craftsmanship that is used for the restoration of historic buildings in the region.
