Holiday season in Switzerland and a beautiful winter day too as we take an early and very packed train from Zurich to Chur. Queuing for the bus to Andeer, we learn that there is no seat without a reservation. Two hours later we at last travel up into the mountains and the snow to the quarries of a granite specialist near the Italian border.
We are interested in an unusual granite with hints of cream and a lot of glitter owing to the mineral limonite and a high content of muscovite. We learn a lot of exciting details about the extraction process, computer-controlled milling, grinding of enormous granite blocks and different surface finishes. The pros and cons of the Swiss referendum for a quota on EU migrants are an integral part of the experience.
